Seven Blessings

In a traditional Jewish wedding ceremony, there is a beautiful ritual called the Seven Blessings (Sheva Brachot in Hebrew) that is recited after the exchange of rings and the giving of the ketubah (marriage contract). Here are the seven blessings recited:

  1. The first blessing praises God for creating the universe and for bringing joy to the bride and groom.
“Blessed are You, LORD, our God, sovereign of the universe, Creator of the vine-fruit. “
  2. The second blessing blesses the couple and celebrates their union as a symbol of God’s love for his people.
“Blessed are You, LORD, our God, sovereign of the universe, who created everything for His Glory. “
  3. The third blessing thanks God for creating humanity and for bringing the bride and groom together in marriage.
“Blessed are You, LORD, our God, sovereign of the universe, Creator of man. “
  4. The fourth blessing asks God to grant the couple joy, happiness, and companionship, and to bless their marriage with peace.
“Blessed are You, LORD, our God, sovereign of the universe, who created man in your image, fashioning perpetuated life. Blessed are You, LORD, Creator of man. “
  5. The fifth blessing praises God for creating joy and gladness, and for bringing happiness to the bride and groom and to all who celebrate with them.
“The barren one will surely exult and be glad in gathering her children to herself joyfully (in haste). Blessed are You, LORD, Gladdener of Zion by way of her children. “
  6. The sixth blessing asks God to bless the bride and groom with love, friendship, and companionship, and to unite them in peace and harmony.
“Loving companions will surely gladden, as you gladdened your creations in the Garden of Eden in the east. Blessed are You, LORD, Gladdener of groom and bride. “
  7. The seventh and final blessing thanks God for creating the universe, for creating humanity, and for bringing joy and happiness to the bride and groom and to all who celebrate with them.
“Blessed are You, LORD, our God, sovereign of the universe, who created joy and gladness, groom and bride, mirth, song, delight and rejoicing, love and harmony and peace and companionship. Quickly, LORD our God, there should be heard in the cities of Judah and in the courtyards of Jerusalem the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of groom and the voice of bride, the jubilant voices of grooms from the bridal canopy, and of young people from the feast of their singing. Blessed are You, LORD, Gladdener of the groom with the bride. “
