I also dedicate this prize to the victims and survivors of human rights abuses, who have inspired me with their courage, resilience, and hope. They are the ones who bear the brunt of war, oppression, and injustice. They are the ones who need our solidarity and assistance.

My journey as a human rights activist began when I witnessed the atrocities of the genocide in Rwanda in 1994. I was a young journalist at the time, and I felt compelled to report on the horrors that were unfolding before my eyes. I saw how innocent civilians were massacred, raped, and displaced by armed groups. I saw how the international community failed to intervene and stop the bloodshed. I saw how human dignity was trampled upon by hatred and violence.

It made me determined to use my voice and my pen to expose the truth and demand accountability. It made me join the Human Rights Watch in 1998, where I have been working ever since.

For the past 25 years, I have traveled to many countries where human rights are under threat or violation. I have documented and denounced crimes against humanity, war crimes, torture, enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detention, censorship, discrimination, and repression. I have advocated for justice, accountability, democracy, and rule of law. I have supported civil society activists, journalists, lawyers, and human rights defenders who are facing harassment, intimidation, arrest, or worse for speaking out against injustice.

I have also witnessed some positive changes and achievements in the field of human rights. I have seen how international justice mechanisms such as the International Criminal Court have brought some perpetrators of grave crimes to justice. I have seen how transitional justice processes such as truth commissions and reparations have helped some societies heal from their past wounds. I have seen how human rights norms and standards have been adopted and implemented by some governments and institutions. I have seen how civil society movements have mobilized and empowered people to demand their rights and participate in public affairs.

But I also know that there is still a long way to go before we can achieve a world where human rights are respected and protected for all. We are living in a time of unprecedented challenges and threats to peace and human rights. We are facing a global pandemic that has exposed and exacerbated the inequalities and vulnerabilities of our societies. We are witnessing a resurgence of authoritarianism, populism, nationalism, and extremism that are undermining democracy and human rights. We are confronting a climate crisis that is threatening our survival and our future.

These challenges require urgent action from all of us. We cannot afford to be complacent or indifferent. We cannot allow ourselves to be divided or discouraged. We must stand together and work together for peace and human rights.

We must uphold the principles and values of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted 75 years ago as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations. We must defend the international human rights system, which was established after World War II as a response to the horrors of fascism and genocide. We must support the work of human rights organizations, which are essential for monitoring, reporting, advocating, educating, and mobilizing for human rights.

We must also recognize that peace is not only the absence of war, but also the presence of justice. Peace cannot be achieved without respect for human rights. Peace cannot be sustained without accountability for human rights violations. Peace cannot be lasting without participation and inclusion of all segments of society.

As Martin Luther King Jr., one of my role models and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate himself said: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Therefore, we must act locally and globally to fight injustice wherever it occurs. We must act with courage and compassion to protect those who are most vulnerable and marginalized. We must act with hope and determination to build a more peaceful and humane world.
